Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the school situated in Brighton & Hove?
We mainly operate home-stay schooling so you will attend
studies at your tutor’s place of residence and we will
ensure that travel from your place of accommodation is as
easy as possible. Group studies of 3 or more are held at the
school premises which is located on one of the major roads
in Brighton, hosting two universities.
Do I need a visa to study in England?
No, not if you are a citizen of an EU country. If, however,
you are from outside the EU please contact the British Embassy
or Consulate in your country for guidance.
Please note: We do not provide any form of documentation
relating to visa applications, official or otherwise, for
anyone outside the EU before full payment has been received.
Is Living Language School able to give general advice
about staying in Brighton?
Certainly. Our tutors are personally familiar with the city
and its amenities and are able to give you reliable advice
or point you in the right direction. We have maps of the local
area available free of charge to the student. Host families
are also very caring and helpful and are carefully selected
to make your stay as memorable as possible.
What if I am unsure about the level of English I
should book?
You may not have studied English for a long time and are,
therefore, unable to identify your current level and your
realistic target. In this case you should email us and we
will ask you to send back a small essay about yourself so
we can assess you and advise the appropriate level of study
Can I start my studies at any time?
Provided we have a tutor available for your requested period
you may choose whenever you would like to start. Apart from
the usual Bank Holidays (Christmas, Easter etc) our school
operates the whole year round
What is the minimum and maximum period of study I
can book?
We have set a minimum period of one week for efficiency and
staffing reasons, however, in theory there is no specific
maximum period. It will partly depend on how many hours you
wish to do each week, and the availability of the same tutor
for a long period. On the booking form page of our website
you should indicate the required dates and we will confirm
them with you.
What are your student age limits?
We stipulate a minimum age of 15, we have no maximum age
and encourage senior citizens to learn.
What is the maximum number of students in a class?
We teach from 1 to 5 in any class though it will depend on
the type of English (i.e. general or speciality such as business
or legal). The size of classes will affect the type of venue.
Please give us your needs regarding individual or group bookings.
Do you provide an escort on arrival?
In principle we are more than happy to give you all the advice
and help you need to arrive safely in Brighton [please see
our arrivals page] where we will meet you and take you to
your host family. We can provide our own transfer services
to/from Gatwick airport at an additional cost if need be.
From the moment you touch down in England it is your opportunity,
however challenging, to activate your English language skills
and you will find in general that the British public are experts
in directing foreign visitors to their destination!
Should I buy £ sterling when I arrive or before
I travel?
We suggest you exchange your currency for Sterling before
arriving, however if this is not possible we can advise you
where to exchange currency in Brighton at the best rates and
commission free. Credit/Debit cards may also be used but we
advise the student to find out the exchange rates prior to
card usage.
What about any Emergency situations?
In the unlikely event of an emergency, we do at sign-up stage
record the students full details including medical conditions
that could potentially be problematic. We also have the student’s
next of kin details available. Emergency advice is given to
the student with relevant phone numbers. In most circumstances
you will have access to a tutor who speaks your native language
to a good level, however this cannot be promised for all nationalities.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if your particular
question is not covered here.
